Langkawi Part 2

Sigh..........again leaving lame excuse of not continuing my stories....busy at work...holding 3 jobs...My perm job as IT engineer, as a photographer at HOA and as a waiter at Mel's place and not forgetting helping my mum for her catering business. But now, its fasting mth and taking break from all this and today is my 2nd day of Mc hence here i am continuing my blog...

2rd day its a bit of anti climax as the rain starts to fall....but we did visit some historic places....

1st) Mat Cincang Mountain aka A walk in the clouds

The mountains at the back are the Mountains of Mat Cincang and Raya
Due to the rain- we visited the place on the forth day instead...

There are two well known mountains in the heart of Langkawi Island, Gunung Raya and Gunung Mat Cincang. Added to the two and appearing to separate them is a hill called Bukit Sawar. If you look hard at Gunung Mat Cincang located at 700m above sea level, you can actually see it is smiling to its 850m high neighbour, Gunung Raya (the island's highest mountain).

Gunung Mat Cincang - A Walk in the CloudsThe legendary Gunung Mat Cincang, Langkawi's second highest peak was believed to have been once a being named Mat Cincang who turned himself into a mountain. Fables aside, today the mountain rises in a spectacular skyline of crags that glow pink in the sunset and is part of the Mat Cincang Range which comprises of some of the oldest rock formations in Malaysia, dated about 2,400 million years old.

Legend says Mat Raya's son was interested in marrying Mat Cincang's daughter, much to the displeasure of Mat Cincang. The boy was said to be of bad character. Despite the reluctance on Mat Cincang's side to accept the boy the marriage did take place. But unfortunately a fight broke out during the wedding feast.
During the fight everyone became violent and pots and pans were flung at one another. A big pot of gravy was broken and the contents spilt on the ground. The spot where the gravy spilt is known as Kuah (gravy) and where the pot was broken as Belanga Pecah (broken pot). A couldron of hot water was also spilt on the ground and the spot is known as Air Panas (hot water).
The fight between the two families went on until it was intervened by Mat Sawar. Both parties reconciled and decided to transform themselves including Mat Sawar into their present forms.

There are two stages of the cable car...after you got to first mountain, you have to take another trip of the cable car to reach to Mount Mat Cincang and there you can walk in the clouds by the Observatory bridge( to get down to the bridge, you have climb down some steep steps- but its worth viewing). May look fighten due to its height and by the blown of the wind you can feel the bridge is swinging side to side. But suprising the blown of the wind is not cold enough to blow you off.

Because of the weather we didnt get to the top of the mountain but instead we went to

2nd) Makam Mahsuri

During the time of the powerful Sultanates of the Malay archipelago there lived a young woman named Mahsuri. She was the most beautiful woman in all of Langkawi, and the wife of Wan Darus, a brave warrior. As was required of him, her husband had to go to war, leaving Mahsuri behind to fend for herself. It was during this time that Mahsuri befriended a young man named Deraman.
Their close friendship lead others in her village to believe that their relationship was sexual in nature. Some versions of the legend claim that the parties who perpetuated the gossip were those who were envious of Mahsuri's beauty. Eventually the rumours grew strong enough that the villagers openly accused her of adultery. Mahsuri pleaded her innocence, but no one believed her.
Following the old Islamic punishment for adultery, Mahsuri was to be tied to a tree (or pole) and stabbed to death. When they stabbed her, white blood flowed from her wound, signifying her innocence. With her dying breath, Mahsuri cursed Langkawi to have seven generations of bad luck.
